The film

The stronger chick is destined to throw the weaker brother from the nest: this is what usually happens when two eagle chicks share the same nest. Man also has his ways, often to hurt those closest to him. Lukas suffers at the hands of a father who has withdrawn since the painful loss of his wife, killed whilst rescuing the infant Lukas from a fire. The boy now carries the burden of her death. Our eagle’s story begins in the nest. The first-born chick pushes his weaker brother to a certain death on the forest floor. But fate intervenes and the chick is found by Lukas. Naming him Abel, Lukas cares for the creature in secret, finding and offering him a love and companionship denied to him at home. But when the day comes to release Abel back into the wild, will Lukas find his own release into a new life?

The directors

In 2005, after a long career directing and writing documentaries, Olivares decided to to jump into fiction and, with the help of producer Jose Mari Morales (Wanda Films), directed the feature film The Great Match, shot in Mongolia, the Sahara and Brazil. This film won several international awards and was selected to participate, among others, in the Berlin International Film Festival. The film was also in the official selection at the Copenhagen International Film Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh, the World Cinema Festival, Cape Town and Desert Nights Filmfest in Rome. It was nominated for Best Film at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival. In 2006, Olivares wrote and directed 14 kilómetros, a film about the plight of African immigration that has won over 15 international awards, affirming him as one of the most committed filmmakers in the panorama of Spanish cinema. His 2010 feature film, Among Wolves, based on the story of Marcos Rodríguez “Pantoja”, has been one of the highest grossing Spanish films of 2010 with more than half a million viewers in theatres. It tells the true story of a young shepherd in a remote mountain area who befriends a pack of wolves and eventually becomes their leader.
