Film criticism

For the fourth successive year, Castellinaria is organising a cinema criticism workshop in collaboration with Tribune des Jeunes Cinéphiles.

The event is aimed mainly at young critics of the Tribune, who throughout almost the entire year experiment with cinema writing on a monthly basis, watching films in the cinemas of the Ticino Canton or at cinema festivals.

Every year Castellinaria invites an important film critic who makes their experience available to the young people, sharing their point of view, their sensibilities and ability to read the language of cinema with the attendees. This allows them both to improve their style of writing and to broaden their world view by listening to the speaker's personal experience.

The aim of the workshop is to allow the young participants to experiment with critical analysis of film writing first hand, thus providing a point of comparison with their (in)ability to understand a film.

The day starts off with a viewing of a film, followed by a brief formal analysis, including of the film's content. During the afternoon, the host critic consults with the young attendees, sharing their point of view on cinema and the world of film criticism. The participants then finally move on to practical matters, writing a critique of the film they watched during the morning session. The host critic reads these reviews and highlights their relative strengths and weaknesses, recommending some future directions to take.

Registration is open to all young cinema lovers aged between 16 and 30.

The event will take place at the Bellinzona Espocentro on Sunday 15 November 2015. Registrations should be accompanied by a brief letter outlining the participant's motivations and sent to:
