India, 1938. Chuyia is a nine-year-old girl and already a widow. Hindu tradition would have her relegated forever to a “widows' home”. Here she will become acquainted with young and old women in her same condition, and her innocence and vitality will bring her into direct contact with some of them. One in particular, Kalayani, grows fond of her while at the same time falling in love with a young disciple of Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent revolution. Even Chuyia will find herself in serious danger that could mark her still very young life forever. |
