BEIJING BICYCLES

2001

A young boy, moved to Peking from the countryside, finds a job as a delivery boy and his company supplies him with a bicycle. Another boy, a student, also needs a bike to be accepted by his schoolmates and to impress the girl he loves. The first boy’s bicycle is stolen and it ends up in the second boy’s hands. After several quarrels, the two find an agreement: they will take turns to use the bicycle. But things are not going to work out as expected…
The film, a kind of Ladri di biciclette (The Bicycle Thief) set in today’s inconsistent Peking, split between free market and the power of tradition, won the Grand Prix of the Jury at 2001 Berlin Film Festival.
