DEVIL'S TOWN

2009

A day in Belgrade, while the TV is showing a live broadcast of a big tennis tournament played by all the best racquets in the nation. Different people’s stories interweave: a penniless girl goes to every length to buy herself expensive tennis equipment; a rich teenager can’t accept that his girlfriend has left him; an émigré returns to the city as a construction entrepreneur and has to deal with corruption; a prostitute’s daughter tries to find her father; a nutty cabdriver blames society for his misfortunes….The nested plot is reminiscent of Bure baruta, the 1998 film by Goran Paskaljevic, the director’s father. And like in that film, here contemporary Belgrade is described as a “devil’s town” still marked by the ruins of war and inhabited by people driven only by primal needs, basic instincts, ambition, fear, obsessions and frustrations.
