Katy McLaughlin (Alison Lohman), a 16-year-old student, goes home to Wyoming. She’s pretty, stubborn and feels oppressed by the traditionalist mentality of her father, Rob, who tries to raise horses on the family homestead, helped by wife Nell. Katy’s attitude becomes too much for Rob when, in addition to risking being flunked, she decides to tame a black mustang, Flicka, against her father’s orders. They both undergo character changes that will finally make them get along.
