Winky Wong is a five-year-old girl who has left China for Holland to join her father, who has a little restaurant in a provincial town. The difficulties in learning a new language and using it at school get easier when Winky makes friends with her neighbors and with their old pony Saartje. Now she can finally play with a living plaything. When the pony dies, the child appeals to Santa Claus for a new one. But who is Santa Claus for a little Chinese girl newly arrived in the west?
