MACHUCA

2004

Chile, 1973. Gonzalo Infante and Pedro Machuca, two 11-year-olds, live in Santiago. Gonzalo lives in a rich neighbourhood and Pedro just a few blocks away, in a newly erected bidonville. An invisible wall that some people would like to break down separates their worlds. One of these is Father McEnroe, head of Gonzalo’s private Catholic school; supported by some of the parents, he gets some of the bidonville kids accepted at his school. The priest is firmly convinced of the need to teach students mutual respect. Pedro Machuca thus finds himself in Gonzalo’s class and they become friends. A friendship not favoured by the world around them.
