A Chinese boy living in Austria invites an Austrian friend to spend the summer with him in China at his grandfather’s house on Hainan Island. At night a Mozart marionette made by the Austrian boy’s mother comes to life and hides in his suitcase. Once in China the Austrian boy is fascinated by the shadow theatre that grandfather Lin Lin is starting up again and Mozart falls in love with the Shadow Princess. But there’s danger because a usurer wants the theatre for himself.
