In the immediate aftermath of the war, amid the rubble of a Naples crippled by poverty, young Carmine and Celestina try to survive as best they can, helping each other. One night, they stow away on a ship bound for New York to live with Celestina’s sister, who had emigrated years earlier. The two children join the many Italian emigrants seeking their fortune in America and disembark in an unknown metropolis. During their journey, they met a gruff but kind-hearted captain. |
