Matteo returns to his village near Naples after ten years of absence. The villagers are all busy preparing for the annual feast-day in honour of the Virgin Mary. Matteo has come back home because his father is about to die and he must put his papers in order. After greeting his mother, Matteo wanders down the village streets where he grew up. Although much has altered since the earthquake in 1980, his walk is nevertheless a trip down memory lane. He recalls his friends and the gang they had; then he remembers what happened to them. But Matteo has stayed away for so long because he is currently serving a prison sentence for having killed Alessandro, his girlfriend Anna’s brother.
