The filmmaker
Best known for his music videos, Elam graduate Tim van Dammen began dabbling in acting, bands and photography as a teen. In between drumming for Collapsing Cities, he has directed two no-budget features and 130+ videos, including clips for Sola Rosa, Boh Runga and Kids of 88. His third feature: Romeo and Juliet: A Love Song, launched at the 2013 NZ film festival, combined Shakespeare, song and trailer trash.
Director’s Statement
"Every generation reinvents Romeo and Juliet in a way that strikes a chord with its peculiar sensibilities, experiences and outlook. This, then, is Romeo and Juliet for the YouTube generation, a film that plays off the wide-ranging tastes of youth accustomed to taking the glamorous with the grimy, the comic with the tragic, the beautiful with the freakish and the venal with the elevated."
