Parvana is an 11-year-old girl who grew up under the absolutist control of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is illegally arrested, Parvana disguises herself as a boy, wearing her brother's clothes, to find money to support her family. Tenacious and persevering, Parvana takes her strength from the stories her father told her, even risking her own life to find out if he’s still alive. The disguise allows her to be completely herself: she wanders the streets of the city without fear of being harassed, purchases the supplies her family needs and makes new friends sometimes unexpected.
