Set against the backdrop of World War I on the Asiago Plateau, Uomini contro retraces the experiences of the division commanded by General Leone, where the young second lieutenant Sassu serves. A former interventionist university student, Sassu had requested a transfer from Trentino, where combat was relatively minor. He reports directly to the company commander, Lieutenant Ottolenghi, a disillusioned war veteran with thinly veiled socialist views. On several occasions, Ottolenghi defies orders that are either pointless or needlessly punitive, ultimately meeting his death during yet another futile assault. During his time at the front, Second Lieutenant Sassu witnesses the unpreparedness of the High Command.
